Vaccines! Better Prevention than Treatment

There are various types of vaccines, most of which contain parts of viruses or bacteria or inactivated strains of them to “train” your pet’s immune system to fight off these specific microorganisms. Over time, the effectiveness of a vaccine decreases, which is why we conduct booster shots to keep your pet’s immune system alert. There are different vaccination protocols, as some vaccines are essential for all animals of a certain species, while others are considered optional but are chosen based on factors like the animal’s environment, sensitivities, or lifestyle, making them more vulnerable to certain pathogens.

For example, in Greece, it is advisable to vaccinate against Leishmaniasis, while in northern countries where sandflies are rare, this vaccine is not considered essential.

Some vaccines, such as the rabies vaccine, are legally required for dog owners in certain countries, including ours, and for travel between countries. Others, like the parvovirus vaccine, are so critical for the safety of your puppy that we often avoid walks until the animal achieves adequate immunity against the disease.

The best treatment is prevention, and your veterinarian is the most qualified professional to design the vaccination protocol that fits your pet’s needs and lifestyle.
